About us

Ensus operates one of Europe's largest bioethanol plants at Wilton on Teesside in North East England. Locally grown feed quality grain is refined to produce over 400 million litres of bioethanol and 350 thousand tonnes of high protein animal feed. Up to 250 thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide from the production process is cleaned and liquefied each year by a partner company to be used in soft drinks and food production.
Member of the CropEnergies Group
Since July 2013, Ensus has been a member of the CropEnergies Group which is one of the leading European manufacturers of sustainably produced bioethanol mainly for the fuel sector today. In four modern production facilities in Germany, Belgium, the UK and France, CropEnergies manufactures approximately 1.3 million cubic meters of bioethanol per year from cereals and sugar beet. Besides bioethanol, the group processes the raw materials into more than 1 million tonnes of high-quality protein food and animal feed products per year. The highly efficient production facilities reduce CO2 emissions by up to 70% across the whole value-added chain compared to fossil fuel. With the production sites, the unique logistics network in Europe as well as trading offices in the USA and Brazil, CropEnergies is one of the leading companies in a major emerging market.
Renewable transport fuel
Ensus produces enough biofuel to meet one third of the UK's bioethanol demand under the UK's Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO), and generates carbon savings equivalent to taking 300,000 cars off the road. The RTFO requires that a proportion of all transport fuel sold in the UK should come from renewable sources in order to combat global warming, and this target will rise to 5% over the next few years.
More sustainable animal feed
Ensus is one of Europe's largest producers of animal feed materials. The 350 thousand tonnes of high protein animal feed DDGS (Distillers' Dried Grains with Solubles) produced each year reduces UK and European demand for soy meal imports that contribute to deforestation pressures in South America.
Captured CO2
The fermentation process also produces pure carbon dioxide, which is being captured and sold to Yara, the world's leading chemical company that converts energy, natural minerals and nitrogen from the air into essential products for farmers and industrial customers. The gas is liquefied on site for distribution to food, drinks and industrial customers in the UK and Europe.
